Associate HR Generalist

Job Summary

The Associate HR Generalist implements Duke's human resources practices and objectives in order to provide an employee-oriented, high-performance culture that emphasizes Duke's Values. This position should be able to apply basic HR knowledge gained from education and/or experience under close supervision and be capable of growing to play a lead role on one or more basic areas and/or play a support role on a competitive HR capability. Decisions made by the Associate Generalist can directly impact Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and employee morale therefore, this role requires good judgment and decision making.

Essential Functions

  1. Support and facilitates the development of Duke's Sedalia Plant workforce.
  • Support workforce planning appropriate to the needs of the location served. May include
    • Weekly workforce planning, headcount reporting and scheduling
    • Maintain staffing processes, apply MDI to established processes
    • Coordinate new hire orientation and onboarding
    • Work closely with temporary agencies providing contingent workers. Help integrate contingent workers into the Duke culture in compliance with legal requirements
    • Deliver HR Basics and key processes such as recruiting, training, HRIS, AAP, etc.
  • Maintain accurate information, ensuring compensation and job move practices comply with current policies and procedures
    • Maintaining accurate HRIS database including job descriptions and titles
    • Maintain consistent job placement process (bids, selection, movement)
    • Maintain wage structure and make decisions on employee compensation
    • Coordinate Initial- and Annual Review processes for all Hourly employees
    • Support Supervisors and Hourly employees with weekly timesheet/payroll/LOA transactions
  • Maintain open communication channels both internally and externally
    • Develop and Maintain relationship with Production Managers, Supervisors, Employees and peers
    • Maintain HR presence on all shifts/departments create accessible HR presence and availability to all levels of employees
    • Keep open line of communication with staffing agencies
  • Carry out staffing and workforce development activities within the plant
    • Support, coordinate and increasingly lead plant recruiting activities, including internal/external job posting, maintaining, and utilizing the applicant tracking system Source and screen candidates, schedule and deliver all pre-employment activities (pre-hire assessments and data collection)
    • Support recruiting efforts as needed, support intern programs
    • Attend job fairs or community events (career fairs, intern programs, etc.)

2. Support and guide supervisors in performance development and improvement efforts.

  • Provide guidance for Supervisors and Managers on the disciplinary process (written, final, and term decisions). Refer Final written or termination decision to Generalist or Manager for review.
  • Support Duke training and development initiatives
  • Support talent assessment, training & development planning

3. Employee Relations point of contact with limited responsibility of resolution of employee conflict (refer to Generalist or Manager for situations that may require investigation).

  • Interprets and provides information to employees on company policies, practices, and procedures such as oversight of personnel leave practices to include basic OSHA/Safety, Worker Compensation, ADA and FMLA guidance (may refer to other SME for more complex issues such as interactive ADA discussions).
  • Maintain knowledge of legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources, safety and environmental function to help ensure policies, procedure, and reporting are in compliance.
  • Communicate accurate information and support employees in the understanding and utilization of their company benefits and wellness programs.

4. Coordinate Nourish Our World Committee.

  • Recruit and retain members and coordinate monthly planning and employee engagement meetings, celebrations & special functions, recognition and support the company culture and Duke Values.

5. May coordinate special projects as needed to support HR and Lean continuous improvement efforts, special business initiatives or other activities as a team leader and/or member.


Job Qualifications

  1. Required Associates Degree or pursing Bachelor's degree
  2. 0 years' Experience required with education or up to 5 years' experience while pursuing degree
  3. Ability to advance to Generalist level within 2 years or an appropriate timeline as determined upon hire (see HR Generalist qualifications).
  4. Ability to influence and teach, to obtain results through others
  5. Excellent quantitative, analytic, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  6. Strong computer skills and application of computer programs and systems thinking
  7. Ability to plan, organize and facilitate projects, ongoing programs and events.
  8. Strong communication skills, both oral and written including ability to manage and resolve conflict effectively
  9. Knowledge and application of statistical techniques a plus.

Workplace Environmental Conditions:

  1. Typical office and manufacturing plant environment
  2. Capable of periodic overnight travel, < 20%
  3. Occasionally subject to sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to heard above the ambient noise level.

Physical Job Requirements:

  • Speaking to employees and customers.
  • Listening to employees and customers.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Standing for continuous periods of time without being able to leave the work area.
