Safety Rotation

A Safety Rotation position reporting to Steve Nagel, Safety, Environmental and Health Manager, has been posted internally.

The Rotation program allows team members the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills as it relates to process improvement strategies and tools that improve safety, optimize productivity and improve the work environment and workplace culture.

Who should apply?

· This program is a recommended development action step for Leads, although we encourage anyone interested in learning more about Duke's Safety Program to apply.

What can I expect?

Transfer of Knowledge. The knowledge that you will gain during the rotation program should be translated to the floor by understanding solid safety practices and why they exist. The goal is this person would be a Safety Leader on the floor educating others in good safe working practices.

Expectations. The candidate will work independently at times conducting safety audits / inspections. At other times, the candidate will be part of a Team and may at times lead a Team that focuses on improving and increasing Safety in the work environment. The Candidate will be expected to talk in front of groups of employees and critically review processes.

Personal & Professional Development. The rotation position doesn't guarantee promotion, it is a step in your development to help yourself and others grow to learn.

Length of Assignment. The typical time for the rotation position is 4-6 months based upon the pace at which you learn and understand the material and execution of the safety tools and leadership skills.

End of Rotation: The position you are coming from will likely be replaced given the length of this assignment; however, we will do our best to return you to the same or a similar job. If you elect or bid to a new or different position, your title and pay will be reviewed to that role. If you are in a Lead position and you have been recommended for the rotation position, you will be returned to a Lead role and could be re-deployed to a different department. Discuss with your Supervisor and HR if you have any questions about this.

Root Cause Problem Solving Skills. The rotation position will work with various teams to conduct practical problem solving to determine the root cause and corrective action(s). They will ensure the implementation and effectiveness of these actions.

Performance Evaluation. Safety will gauge the candidate's progress with a training roadmap to include regular performance feedback and a 90-day evaluation. By the end of your time in the position you will be able to coach/teach the outlined skills and recognize safety risks / hazards with limited help from the Safety Team. You will be responsible for good attendance habits, high professionalism and performance of the basic assignments.


What will I be doing? Some of the areas you may be trained in include (but are not limited to):

· Conducting Safety Audits - Fire Extinguishers, Emergency Lighting, Eye Wash Stations, etc.

· Conducting / Participating in Safety Gemba's.

· Safety Training - Conducting Safety Training - General Safety Training, Forklift Reviews, Safety Orientation, etc.

· Performing Job Safety Analysis - Critically reviewing work tasks to understand risk and corrective action.

· Providing a "Fresh Eyes" approach - reviewing safety practices, programs, processes to provide another view.

· Participating in Accident Investigations.

What skills are needed?

We are not expecting the candidate to have any formal background in Safety.

The Candidate should:

· Be able to speak in front of groups of other employees.

· Be a Team Player and have the ability communicate concepts and also listen to the views of others.

· Be able to critically work through issues to understand root cause and move toward corrective action.

· Be able to work with basic Microsoft Office Applications - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.

· Be able to work independently as well as a team environment.

· Be able to maintain confidentiality as needed.

· Be professional, organized, and maintain regular attendance.


What is the pay?

· As this is a temporary position and a learning opportunity, there will be no change to your pay in the rotation assignment.
